what does the bible say?
The Bible refers to both heaven and hell as real places. In a technical sense, these are better understood as the places where the dead are right now. What we commonly think of as "heaven"—the final, eternal abode of enjoyment in God's presence for those who are His children through Jesus Christ—is the new heavens and new earth. What we commonly think of as "hell"—the final, eternal abode of torment for all who reject Jesus Christ—is the lake of fire. So, when asking about heaven being on earth, we must understand that heaven, as it currently exists, is not the final eternal home for Christians. The Bible describes a future where God will create a new heaven and new earth, the ultimate eternal dwelling place for believers (Revelation 21:1–5). The current heaven is where believers are spiritually present with God after death, awaiting resurrection and the new creation (2 Corinthians 5:8; 2 Peter 3:12–13). This new creation will restore God's original intent, as seen in the Garden of Eden, where humanity will live in resurrected bodies in perfect fellowship with Him (Revelation 21–22). Our role now is to live faithfully in a fallen world, share the hope of salvation, and look forward to the promised eternal life with God.
