DOES God EXIST?

Quick answer

God has revealed His existence to humanity through the Bible, His creation of the universe, and Jesus Christ. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we can know God and enjoy eternal life with Him.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

God's existence is revealed in both the Bible and the natural world. God is the eternal Creator, existing from everlasting to everlasting, and denying His existence is foolish (Psalm 90:2, Psalm 14:1). The New Testament further confirms that creation testifies to God's reality (Romans 1:20) and that Jesus Christ, as the Son, reveals God's nature and sustains all things (Hebrews 1:2-3). Arguments for God's existence, such as the arguments from cause, design, and morality, support the belief in an intelligent Creator. Ultimately, the Bible teaches that God created humanity for a relationship with Him. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we can know God and enjoy eternal life with Him.

IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY

Many arguments have been presented both for and against the existence of God. While most acknowledge a God of some kind, some have foolishly doubted the existence of God altogether. Here are a few of the more common arguments for God’s existence.

Argument from Cause – Everything that exists had to come from something else, namely God. Philosophically, this argument is presented as: (1) Everything that had a beginning had a cause (principal of causality); (2) The universe had a beginning (supported by the second law of thermodynamics, the expansion of the universe, and the radiation echo of the initial explosion of the universe); (3) Therefore, the universe had a cause.

Argument from Design - Every design has a designer; the universe reveals complex design; therefore, the universe has a Designer. This design includes both natural and supernatural causes. Both the macro level (design found in the universe based on astronomy) and the micro level (design found at the cellular level) support the argument of highly designed and complicated forms of life that find no adequate explanation apart from an outside, powerful force capable of intelligent design. This Intelligent Designer points to the existence of God.

Argument for Morality – (1) Every law has a lawgiver; (2) There is an absolute moral law; (3) Therefore, there must be an absolute Lawgiver. In response to those who question the existence of an absolute moral law, C.S. Lewis wrote in Mere Christianity , “The moment you say that one set of moral ideas can be better than another, you are, in fact, measuring them both by a standard, saying that one of them conforms to that standard more nearly than the other. But the standard that measures two things is something different from either. You are, in fact, comparing them both with some Real Morality, admitting that there is such a thing as a real Right, independent of what people think, and that some people's ideas get nearer to that real Right than others. Or put it this way. If your moral ideas can be truer, and those of the Nazis less true, there must be something-some Real Morality-for them to be true about."

Whether or not someone believes in the existence of God, that person is exercising a measure of faith. Everyone trusts in something even if they cannot fully see it, so they are exercising faith in believing in it. For example, we all believe in gravity or in the existence of love even though we cannot see it. The Bible provides the most understandable and logical explanation for why things exist, who made everything, and why we are here on Earth. The Bible truthfully states that God has always existed and that at a time of His choosing, He brought into existence all things in heaven and on earth, including human beings. Human beings were created to have a relationship with God, to know Him and make Him known around the world. However, sin entered the world, brought death to people, and destroyed our relationship with God. The good news is that Jesus came to save the people of the world from sin and death through His death on the cross and resurrection from the dead. By faith in Jesus Christ, we are made right with God, given eternal life and forgiven of all our sins. Those who know Jesus, can know God exists, have a relationship with Him, and enjoy life with Him now and for all eternity.
