In what ways will the resurrection body be different from our current bodies?
The Bible offers several details regarding the resurrection body, or glorified body, of believers in eternity. The following passages offer a way to compare and contrast the current human body with the body believers will possess in heaven:
The current body decays; the resurrection body will not: "What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable" (1 Corinthians 15:42).
The current body includes dishonor and weakness; the resurrection body will be glorious and powerful: "It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power" (1 Corinthians 15:43).
The current body is physical; the resurrection body will be spiritual: "It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body" (1 Corinthians 15:44).
The current body is perishable/limited; the resurrection body will be imperishable/eternal: "For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality" (1 Corinthians 15:53).
The current body is limited to earth; the resurrection body will be in heaven: "For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord" (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).
The current body lives in a temporary location; the resurrection body will live in a location prepared by the Lord: "In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also" (John 14:2-3).
The current body requires food and drink to survive; the resurrection body will only eat and drink to enjoy community with God and His people: "I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 8:11). Luke 14:15 adds Jesus saying, "Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!"
These are only some of the ways our resurrection body will be different from our earthly body. The fact that our resurrection body will be eternal and dwell in an eternal home with the Lord certainly will include many other abilities and changes we can anticipate that will exceed the limitations of our human bodies.
