When seeking a husband, the most important criteria a woman should look for is if the man loves and follows Jesus; we want a husband who could be said to be a man after God's heart. Although our spouse should have priority among our human relationships, our relationship with God is the most important. The Bible instructs us to only marry someone with whom we are equally yoked (2 Corinthians 6:14). Equally yoked classifies a person as a fellow follower of Christ. It is crucial that we marry another believer so that, as a couple, our lives' purposes and way of life will be aligned.
Not only should a woman look for a Christian man, but a man who continues to mature in his faith after becoming a believer. The Bible provides numerous descriptions of what a godly man looks like. For example, a godly man is strong, humble, and caring (1 Corinthians 16:13; 1 Peter 5:5; Mark 10:43–45). Jesus Himself is the perfect example. The role a husband plays in relation to his wife symbolizes the role Jesus plays in relation to the Church (Ephesians 5:22–33).
As previously stated, the first quality to look for in a prospective husband is that he is a man after God's own heart. After God removed Saul from the throne of Israel, He appointed David and said, "I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will" (Acts 13:22). God wants men like David, who understand His will, are obedient to Him, and do the work of His kingdom. Another key quality to look for is a man who loves his wife as he loves himself. In Ephesians chapter 5, Paul describes the role of a husband. He states, "Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her… In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself" (Ephesians 5:25, 28). A good husband will love his wife sacrificially and unconditionally. He will be willing to do anything, including laying down his life, in order to care for and protect her. In addition, a husband should be a spiritual leader for his family. As the head of the household he is responsible for helping his wife, and any children they might have, to follow God and for taking care of them (1 Corinthians 11:3; Ephesians 6:4; 1 Timothy 5:8).
If a man embodies the qualities listed above, he will be a faithful and God-honoring husband. However, it is also wise to consider some other factors for a future spouse. You should look for someone with similar doctrinal beliefs, moral values, interests and goals, and political beliefs. It is recommended to discuss important topics such as children, residence, extended family, and finances before getting married. You want someone who can bring out the best in you by supporting you while also being honest with you. Physical and romantic attraction are also valid and important things to consider.
The perfect husband does not exist. However, if you find a man who is committed to serving God and loves you unconditionally, then you will have found a faithful partner to share this life with.
