Should children always be considered a blessing from God?

In God's design, children are to be born to two adults committed to each other in a loving marriage. This doesn't always happen. Children can be conceived by teenagers in the back seat of a car, by a woman being raped, by prostitution. It is easy to focus on the circumstances of the parents in such instances and how a pregnancy can be a great hardship for them. And such pregnancies can be a hardship—a continuation of the trauma, even. Women caught in such circumstances need our love and support.

But God quite clearly sees another person in the mix: the baby. A baby created in God's own image (Genesis 1:27), knitted carefully in her mother's womb (Psalm 139:13-18), with the potential for great things in her life (Ephesians 2:10). When it comes to the worth of a baby, the manner in which she was conceived is not a factor.

God is in the business of redeeming impossible situations. Romans 8:28 says, "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." All things. Not just convenient things or things that go according to plan or things that were wanted. God's grace is not limited by the conditions of the world.

When Jesus started His public ministry, He quoted from Isaiah 61:1-3. For those who follow Him, He promises to "bind up the brokenhearted … comfort all who mourn … give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning." Making the sacrifice to value and cherish a new life, no matter how she was conceived or received into a family, allows God to make us "oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified."
