TL;DR:

In heaven, we will live in the fullness of life and relationship with God and other believers. It will be anything but boring.

from the old testament

  • In heaven, we will feast and eat with the Lord and His people: "On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined" (Isaiah 25:6).

from the new testament

  • The Bible does not fully answer what we will be doing in heaven, but it does describe several of the eternal activities believers will be doing in heaven. First, we will clearly worship the Lord. Revelation 5:13 shares, "And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, 'To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!'" This will include worship alongside angels as well as believers from all ages and locations, from every nation and people on earth.
  • Just as Isaiah 25:6 discussed feasting, other passages note Jesus speaking of feasting or eating in eternity (Matthew 8:11; Luke 22:30).
  • In heaven, we will dwell together with all other believers. This includes the saints of old, such as Abraham, Moses, and David. Additionally, it encompasses being reunited with our loved ones who have gone before us, including parents, grandparents, spouses, children, grandchildren, and other dear friends from whom we have experienced painful separation in this life. Revelation 21:3–4 promises that God will dwell with His people, and there will be no more death, mourning, crying, or pain, which offers great anticipation for heaven.
  • We will celebrate for eternity in heaven. Revelation 19:9 and other places describe the future marriage supper of the Lamb as a time of great joy and celebration.
  • We will continue to serve the Lord in heaven. Jesus affirmed the Old Testament Law, saying, "You shall worship the Lord your God and him only you shall serve" (Matthew 4:10). This close connection between worship and service will continue in heaven in ways we will not fully understand until that time. This idea is supported by Revelation 22:3–5, which describes the eternal worship of God by His people, emphasizing their role in serving Him forever.
  • The descriptions of the new heaven, earth, and heavenly city in Revelation 21–22 provide a dazzling picture of the believers' future home, a place we will enjoy and that should cause us to greatly anticipate living there for eternity.

implications for today

The concept of heaven can sometimes seem abstract and distant, but understanding what the Bible says about it can transform our perspective on eternity. Instead of dreading an eternity of boredom, we can look forward to a vibrant and purposeful existence. In heaven, we will continue to worship God in meaningful ways and live in the fullness of our relationship with Him. We will also experience the fullness of our salvation and the fullness of how God created us to be. We will also serve God and enjoy celebrating what God has done with Him and with others. This glimpse into heaven’s activities should ignite a sense of excitement and anticipation within us. It encourages us to live with a heavenly mindset, focusing on things above (Colossians 3:2), investing in relationships, and serving God faithfully now, knowing that these things have eternal significance and will continue in eternity.
