Are aliens and UFOs real?

Aliens and UFOs have become a popular and permanent fixture in today's culture. Do such things exist? What does the Bible teach on this issue?

First, it is clear that to date no clear evidence has been provided to substantiate proof of advanced alien life forms. While there may be life beyond the earth, the claims of intelligent, human-like life forms on other planets are still unproven.

Second, the Bible is clear that the creation of the earth (Genesis 1:1) and human life in particular are unique creations of the one true God of the universe. Genesis 1:27 teaches, "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them." Even if life forms exist on other planets, this would not contradict the uniqueness of the earth and human life (Acts 17:24-26).

However, since thousands of claims have been made regarding UFOs and alien life forms, how are we to understand such claims? Many options and possibilities exist.

Many claims have a natural or human explanation. For example, UFO sightings have often been found to be military aircraft, the sighting of planets at certain times of the year, or something similar. These are not alien sightings, but rather natural or human phenomena that are not out of the ordinary.

Other claims are simply fabricated or exaggerated. There is great temptation to speculate about alien life forms or UFOs because of the attention often given to such stories. Yet the gap between making a claim regarding aliens and substantiating these claims is tremendous.

Some suggest demonic spirits or forces may be involved in certain alien and UFO sightings. The idea is that if an alien encounter is real, what is the source? In investigating the experiences of those who have claimed to have contact with aliens, many of the traits resemble those who have communicated with spirits of the dead, fortune telling, and similar activities. As a result, it is sometimes concluded that if the experience was real, then a demonic spirit must be the cause or source of it. Of course, not all Christians agree on this issue, but it is certainly one possibility to explain the numerous accounts of alleged alien abductions, not only in the past century, but also alien encounter stories found throughout human history.

In the end, the Bible neither explicitly affirms nor denies the possibility of alien life forms. However, Scripture is clear regarding the uniqueness of the earth and human life, warns against being led astray by lies, and teaches we are to "test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil" (1 Thessalonians 5:21-22).
